Ipsut
This 30? junk rigged schooner is traditional riveted lapstrake construction with cedar planking and white oak frames. She is easy to sail, stable (8? beam), and can be single handed easily. It has an oversized cuddy cabin, outboard engine well, and a large storage lazarett in the stern. The steering well is self bailing and it comes with a large capacity hand pump bailer. The benefit of the junk rigged sails (built by Carol Hasse of Port Townsend Sails) is that they are extremely easy to reef and furl, easy to jibe, low chafe, and sail extremely well downwind.
Ipsut was built in Port Townsend by Steve Johnston in 1977 and eventually became the property of the Wooden Boat Foundation. Port Townsend shipwright Martin Mills bought her from the Foundation and extensively restored and rebuilt her, sailing her locally for several years. Since 2002, Dave Williams has re-planked the flat of the bottom with 2 layers of ½? Okume plywood. The transom-hung dory style rudder has been replaced with a vertical rudder post and steel kickup rudder with a yellow cedar hand carved tiller. Elevated V berths were built in the cuddy cabin, finished with 2? closed cell foam. A hand operated ?Whale Gusher? bilge pump was installed on the cabin bulkhead. A new aluminum motor well was built to hold an outboard motor. The mast partners for both fore and main were improved to accommodate custom sewn mast boots. Bow mounted anchor chocks with bronze rollers were added. A bronze halyard winch for the foresail was added, enabling all control lines to be handled in the cockpit. In addition, a new large compass was mounted on top of the cabin.
