Remarks
MAYA was built to sail anywhere in the world with safety and ease of handling the prime concern. A unique feature is the custom three watertight doors. In addition to this she has five watertight bulkheads. MAYA was built to Det Norske Veritas class. Plan approval and hull survey including X-rays during construction MAYA was built with heavier scantlings than required by DNV approval. She has 8mm plate on topsides then 10mm on bottom 12mm around the keel and 50mm on keel bottom. The frames were closed up to 600mm and the stringers were doubled from just aft of the beam forward. A very strong solid vessel. The wheelhouse was designed with safety as a prime concern also. The side and forward glass windows are a double layer of 8mm armor plate glass laminated together. In the unlikely event that they should break the wheelhouse is watertight from the rest of the boat. It has its own hatch companionway and drain system. There are storm covers for these windows. The systems have been designed for short-handed sailing. The first owner and his wife sailed the boat from New Zealand to Kodiak Alaska and returned to Seattle with just them and their two small children (this was before the Leisure Furl Boom was installed). THE DESIGNERS: Naval Architect Alan Warwick one of New Zealand's most prolific designers is responsible for MAYA's good looks and sailing characteristics. Electric Projects Inc. of Auckland was responsible for the electrical design and installation. Chris Mitchell of Applied Engineering was responsible for the rig design. He designed a custom die for the mast as he felt no mast extrusion in New Zealand was stiff enough for MAYA. He also designs for America's Cup boats and other builders around the world.THE BUILDER: McMullen & Wing is New Zealand's oldest boat builder of aluminum boats. They also work with all other materials. They built BLACK MAGIC that won the America's Cup and also Peter Blake's ENZA. There are a refit and building yard with a worldwide reputation for first class quality and engineering. Boats all over the world go to McMullen & Wing for refits.MAYA is US flagged and duty paid.
